$10 Billion Stake: The Windfall for Anthropic Backers Before the Bell Rings

Early and late-stage investors are poised for massive returns as the AI giant approaches a potential $2 trillion listing, with some holding stakes worth billions at the current private valuation.

The financial stakes for early backers of Anthropic have reached a staggering high, with one prominent investor holding a position valued at nearly $10 billion. This figure represents the current private market valuation of the artificial intelligence lab, which stands at $965 billion. While the company is expected to go public later this year at a valuation that could reach $2 trillion, the wealth generated for venture capitalists and early shareholders is already substantial.

The most significant individual holding belongs to Eric Schmidt, the former chief executive of Google. According to PitchBook data, Schmidt participated in Anthropic’s Series A round in 2021 when the startup was valued at just $461 million. His long-term commitment has resulted in an ownership stake of approximately 1% of the company. At the current private valuation, that slice of equity translates to a net worth increase of nearly $10 billion for the technology veteran.

Institutional investors who entered the market more recently have also seen their portfolios swell. Iconiq, an investment firm, wrote a $6 billion check to Anthropic last year. At the time of that transaction, the company was already valued at $183 billion. That late-stage bet has appreciated significantly, with the position now worth $17 billion. Analysts suggest this figure could double if the initial public offering achieves the top end of its projected valuation range.

Menlo Ventures occupies another key position in the cap table. The firm led the Series D round and has cumulatively invested more than $1 billion into the AI lab. This sustained capital injection has yielded a stake that is currently valued at $14 billion. The appreciation reflects the rapid growth in the market capitalization of leading AI developers over the past few years.

Sequoia, a renowned venture capital firm, took a different approach by entering the market earlier this year. At that time, Anthropic was already valued at $380 billion. Sequoia invested $3 billion to secure roughly 1% ownership. Despite the high entry point, the investment has more than doubled in value since the transaction was completed. This demonstrates the continued premium that the market places on leading AI infrastructure providers.

Sound Ventures, a firm launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, also holds a significant position. The group initially invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C round. They subsequently funneled an additional $400 million into the company. This combined investment has resulted in a stake worth billions of dollars today. It is worth noting that Kutcher departed from Sound Ventures this year to launch a new venture capital firm, though the firm's Anthropic position remains intact.

Spark Capital offers perhaps the most dramatic example of return on investment among known holders. The firm is the only venture capital company known to hold a board seat at Anthropic. Spark invested $75 million in the same 2023 Series C round, which valued the company at $5 billion. That initial outlay has ballooned more than ninetyfold, resulting in a position now valued at $7 billion.

These valuations are based on the most recent private market pricing. However, the upcoming public listing is expected to further increase the worth of these stakes. If Anthropic achieves a valuation of $2 trillion at its initial public offering, the holdings of these key investors will see another substantial jump. The market is closely watching this transition from private to public markets, which could redefine the financial landscape for AI leadership.

The coming months will be critical for determining the final worth of these positions. Investors are monitoring market sentiment and the broader economic environment as they await the official debut of the company on the stock exchange. The potential for wealth creation in this sector remains a focal point for business desks and market analysts alike.
