FSD Subscription Count Tied to Executive Compensation Goals

Tesla reports a rise in active software users under a definition designed to meet executive performance targets rather than standard subscription metrics.

By Ama Boateng ·

Tesla has announced that active subscriptions for its Full Self-Driving software reached 1.74 million as of October 21, 2026, a figure that represents a 67% year-over-year increase. However, the metric's composition reveals a conflict regarding how the company measures engagement: the count includes both monthly recurring payments and customers who purchased the software outright in a single lump sum. This specific methodology was established to satisfy the requirements of the 2025 CEO Performance Award, indicating that the reported statistics are directly aligned with executive compensation milestones rather than standard industry accounting practices.

The company's reporting practices regarding software adoption have shifted significantly over time. Tesla ceased offering the Full Self-Driving package as a one-time purchase in February 2026, restricting new customers to a monthly subscription model priced at $99. Nevertheless, the current total of 1.74 million includes individuals who paid upfront prices as high as $15,000 years ago, provided their vehicles remain active. While the metric excludes free trials, the company has not disclosed the specific number of users currently paying the monthly fee, a detail that is crucial for assessing the financial stability of this revenue stream.

This reporting structure is necessary to advance toward specific financial objectives. Reaching a threshold of 10 million active subscriptions is a required operational milestone for unlocking tranches of the 2025 CEO Performance Award, which remains valid until 2035. In addition to the subscription target, the award outlines other major operational goals, including delivering 20 million vehicles, deploying 1 million Optimus robots, and operating 1 million robotaxis. As of June 30, Tesla identified only the 20 million vehicle delivery target as probable to be met.

Further complications exist regarding the delivery of promised services. Hundreds of thousands of individuals included in the active subscription count were sold unsupervised self-driving capabilities that Tesla has not yet released. Additionally, the company reports that over 75% of new vehicle deliveries in North America during the third quarter included software subscriptions, though specific details regarding retention rates for these users are not provided.

Tesla added 260,000 net subscriptions during the third quarter, marking a record pace. However, if the company continues to add subscriptions at the current rate of 700,000 per year, reaching the 10 million target would require approximately 12 years. Even at the record pace observed this quarter, the timeline to reach the goal would extend to roughly eight years.
